WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VOLTAREN GEL 1% AND VOLTAREN EMULGEL 1.16%?
In the USA, Voltaren Gel (1% diclofenac sodium) has been approved for the treatment of osteoarthritic joints such as the knees and those of the hands. Canada’s Voltaren Emulgel (1.16% diclofenac diethylamine) is indicated for the short-term treatment of soft and connective tissue injuries (muscles, ligaments and tendons). While the Canadian product is not approved for osteoarthritis, a study published in the Journal of Rhematology shows that diclofenac diethylamine (as in Voltaren Emulgel) was safe and effective for relief of symptoms of osteoarthritis of the knee. The two products have never been compared with one another in a published scientific study, but given that they contain the same active ingredient in nearly equal concentrations one might expect that they deliver similar results.
If you aren’t certain that Voltaren Emulgel is right for you, we recommend that you check in with your physician to make sure. And, as with all medicines, read package directions carefully to ensure that you take as directed to help maximize its efficacy and minimize the risk for any side effects.
Gently rub a small amount of Voltaren Emulgel onto the painful or swollen area 2 or 3 times daily. The amount of gel applied depends upon the size of the area treated. Voltaren Emulgel is suitable for use by all age groups.
Voltaren Emulgel is for external use only. Do not cover treated area with bandages after application of the gel. Apply only to intact skin, not to wounds or open injuries. Avoid contact with eyes or mucous membranes and wash your hands after application, unless this is the site being treated. Do not use Voltaren Emulgel if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. You should not use Voltaren Emulgel if you are pregnant or breast-feeding except under medical supervision. Keep out of the reach of children. Carefully read packaging for any other possible restrictions. If symptoms do not improve within two weeks of commencing treatment, or worsen, consult your doctor.
The active ingredient in Voltaren Emulgel is the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory diclofenac sodium 1% w/w (as diclofenac diethylamine).
